Protect against boat theft

Take precautions to prevent the theft of your boat this summer - that’s the message from Richmond Local Area Command police following a series of recent incidents in the district.
Police advise that boat owners:

  • Record all details of your boat and equipment, including serial numbers, and keep the list in a safe place.
  • Engrave valuable items. Police suggest using your driver’s licence number.
  • Mark your dinghy with an identifying feature, such as your driver’s licence number.
  • Fit an anti-theft device to your trailer.
  • Fit a quality lock to your boat.
  • Remove valuable items from your boat when you leave it unattended. If you have to leave valuables on board, ensure they are out of sight.
  • Do not leave valuables in your parked car while you are on the water.
  • Consider fitting a quality alarm to your boat.

Police also advise to practice safe boating, including being aware of the alcohol limit of .05 for recreational vessel operators aged 18 years and over.
