Participants in the Queen’s Baton Relay through Ballina mixed with sporting ‘royalty’ as the town got an early taste of Melbourne Commonwealth Games fever.
One of the runners was none other than Geoff Hunt, the former 11-times British Open squash champion. Hunt is also a coach of this year’s Games squash squad.

Two members of the Ballina Bears Cricket Club will represent New South Wales in the annual national Indigenous cricket championship, the Imparja Cup.

Recent flooding is proving costly for Ballina and its surrounding areas.
ABC radio reported that Ballina Shire Council has estimated the damage repair bill would be about $600,000. This expenditure would go on roads and infrastructure.
A council spokesman told the ABC that the damage was on par with that caused by last June’s flood.

Ballina Jockey Club will host several cup meetings this year, as well as its major meeting, the Ballina Cup, on September 14.
