Ballina Shire – Broadband Internet Initiative

As part of the Federal Government National Broadband strategy, 10 councils [including Ballina Council] have developed a partnership to liaise with local communities to the determine the demand for Broadband Internet services through the Broadening Broadband project.

Fortunately, for both work and pleasure, I have been able to use broadband services for a number of years, and I really feel sorry for those living in areas, where because of a lack of infrastructure, cannot receive a Broadband Internet connection.  If you are one of these people I urge you to visit the Broadening Broadband website to register your interest in receiving broadband in your area.

It seems crazy this day and age those wishing for a faster internet connection are unable to do so because of a lack of infrastructure.  I live in East Ballina, and know of people living only 300 m from my place that can not received and ADSL connection.

If you live in the Ballina Shire and cannot receive broadband let us know in the comments below.

This is a big issue for me, living and working in a rural area.
I am, unfortunately, located approximately 500 metres north of Ballina Shire under the rule of the Byron Shire Council.

I am interested to know why the Byron Shire Council is not listed as one of the members of the project. Surely this is as good for them as it is for the other councils…

I have moved to Skennars Head between Ballina and Lennox Head. After talking to Optus my carrier, Telstra (frequently) both local Federal Members Offices and Telecommunications Ombudsman I still cannot get Broadband. I live 4.6 k from nearest exchange – Broadband only extends 3.8k from the exchange. I live near a Catholic Primary School and a Catholic High School – why can’t I get Broadband?? Northern Star 23/1/07 had article on Telstra Countrywide extending Broadband on the Northern Rivers -when I enquired they said my area was not on current or propsed projects for the area. Have applied for info regarding Wireless Broadband under this scheme but have not heard back anything.
    Talk about frustrating!!!

I know of a Ballina resident who lives near Canal Road (which is in the Fripp Oval area) and he is having the same troubles as Alan.
I told him of Alan’s explanation that Broadband extends only 3.8km from the exchange, but he says he would be inside that distance.
He also says he is finding it very frustrating.

We live in South Ballina and “as the crow flies” we are less than one kilometre from the Ballina CBD. I have a small business and my partner is a student. We are desperate for broadband and it is affecting my business and my partners study by not having access to it. Telstra misleads with it’s cosy ads about helping regional Australians. We may have to leave the are to compete with city folk and this is a disgrace.
