Wollongbar, Alstonville to get junior AFL teams
Darren from Lismore reports on a bid to boost junior AFL in the Wollongbar and Alstonville region …
Children from Alstonville and Wollongbar can now play AFL football with the formation of a new Auskick club for this coming season.
Plateau Power will join Brunswick Bulldogs, Ballina Bombers, Byron Magpies and Lismore Swans in the Northern Rivers’ junior AFL Auskick competition.
Already, 22 youngsters have signed up to play for the Power during the local Auskick sign-on day on Saturday, with at least 20 more set to join as the season edges closer.
Potential numbers suggest that the Power will be represented in teams from Under-8s, Under-10s, Under-12s and Under-14s.
The idea to form a club for Alstonville and Wollongbar came last year when Peta Snart, from Alstonville, and Ian Holder, the NSW/ACT-AFL Auskick co-ordinator for Northern NSW, gauged interest from teachers, parents and children for such a club.
Peta is now the club president.
Children interested in joining a local team in their area can still do so, with sign-ons continuing through to early April, when the season begins.
Each junior signing on to play in the Under-8s and Under-10s will receive an Auskick backpack full of footy goodies.
Contacts for each club are:
