Treated wood products subject of ban

A Federal Government ban on CCA (copper chromium arsenate) treated wood will come into force on March 12.

A decision by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority to phase out the use of treated wood means that wood containing CCA will be banned from use in garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, children’s play equipment, patio and domestic decking and handrails.

The Good Wood Education Initiative, which was set up to help consumers make the right choices about treated wood, says the ban follows health concerns about the potential harmful effects of close contact with CCA timbers.

However, with a few simple, commonsense safety precautions that apply to handling and using many materials, treated wood is safe to use in the great majority of residential, commercial and community situations, Good Wood says.
