ABS tells us how fast are we growing

So how fast is Australia growing? The Australian Bureau of Statistics can tell us.

The ABS says that on March 1, 2006, at 13:53:47 (Canberra time), the resident population of Australia was projected to be 20,505,335.

How does the ABS arrive at this figure? The ABS says the projection is based on the estimated resident population at March 31, 2005, and assumes growth since then of:

  • One birth every 2 minutes and 4 seconds
  • One death every 3 minutes and 52 seconds
  • A net gain of one international migrant every 4 minutes and 11 seconds leading to
  • An overall total population increase of one person every 2 minutes and 9 seconds.
