Weekend fishing, surfing report for Ballina, Lennox Head

Cyclone Wati holds the key to any fishing and surfing activities this weekend. In fact, it holds the key to any outdoor activities.

The Bureau of Meterology yesterday issued a strong wind warning for the region, predicting south-east winds to 33 knots and seas to 3m with an easterly swell.

You can forget about outside fishing this weekend and it would be best to find a sheltered riverbank somewhere (if that’s at all possible).

We can report that some big flathead have been taken in the Richmond River. One bloke who caught a lizard of about 3kg from North Wall this week told us about the one that got away which made his catch look like a baby. He was using a soft plastic prawn and says the fake bait had been working well.

He also told us of another angler who landed some huge flathead but threw them straight back. A good move too, because those big flathead are female.

For the novice surfers, it might be a good idea to look for something else to do this weekend. Check out http://www.gumbylock.com.au/Aussie/html/Links/Links_B.html

But for those experienced in big conditions, inside Lennox Point might be worth a look provided it’s sheltered from the expected strong south-easterly.

The Pass at Byron Bay has had some great days of surf recently and could be the spot to be this weekend (that’s if you can handle surfing with a couple of hundred of your best mates!).
