Tintenbar-East Ballina are the L J Hooker League cricket champions for 2005-06 after scoring an amazing win against the odds against Southern Districts at Oakes Oval, Lismore, on March 26.

Tintenbar-East Ballina had to score a last-round win against Lennox Head to make the semi-finals, then beat the previously undefeated Eastern Districts in the minor semi-final.

Because Souths finished above the ‘Bar on the ladder, Tintenbar-East Ballina had to win to take the title — a draw would have meant Souths won.

This difficult task was made even harder when the first day’s play of the final was washed out. This meant Tintenbar-East Ballina had to win the toss, send Souths in to bat and dismiss them quickly, then bat well to win.

The match followed this script.

Led by Brett Crawford, who took 5-29 to go with his 5-10 against Easts in the semi, Tintenbar restricted Souths to 194. 
However, this still meant Tintenbar-East Ballina had to score at better than six runs an over to win. Crawford and Phil Dalli took up the challenge, adding 78 for the first wicket.

Crawford went on to score 64 before being run out in a dubious decision.

Mick Gabriel, with 67, and Duncan Elphick (34 not out) played major roles as Tintenbar reached 7-195 to score an astonishing win.
