Road strategy ‘not working’, says Member for Ballina
An Auditor-General’s Performance Report on ‘Agencies Working Together to Improve Services’ has revealed that the NSW Labor Government’s Road Safety Strategy to save 820 lives between 2000 and 2005 has not been met, according to Member for Ballina Don Page.
“The report reveals that the estimated number of lives saved to 2005 is 234 when the target was 820,” Mr Page said.
“The objective of the Road Safety 2010 Strategy (RS2010) was to halve the road toll, saving 2000 lives between 2000 and 2010.
“We are six years into a 10-year strategy and the Auditor-General is saying only 234 of the 820 targeted number of lives have been saved in the period between 2000 and 2005.
“This is a very disappointing result.
“It reflects a lack of commitment by this Labor Government to road safety and reducing the high cost of road trauma in our community.”
Mr Page said the Auditor-General also revealed ‘there has not been a specific allocation (of funds) for RS2010′.
“How fair dinkum is the State Government about their Road Safety Strategy when they are so far away from meeting their own objectives?” Mr Page said.
“To be achieving less than 30 per cent of their target should be a huge wake-up call. The Carr-Iemma Government needs to increase its roads budget to improve roads, increase highway patrol resources, increase the education
component of road safety and generally get their act together on road safety.”
