Four killed on district roads; Minister invited to visit

Following four fatal accidents on North Coast roads in two days, Shadow Minister for North Coast Don Page has invited NSW Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal to visit the North Coast and see first-hand the many road issues that confront our community.

Mr Page has written to Mr Roozendaal highlighting the seriousness of the situation after one man lost his life on the Summerland Way and three people were killed on the Pacific Highway.

“The state of our roads and the impact of increased traffic volume are serious issues that demand proper attention,” Mr Page said.

“I strongly urge the Minister to visit the North Coast to see for himself the need to address the ongoing issue of lives being unnecessarily lost on our roads.

“The Auditor-General’s recent report showing the State Government is achieving less than 30 per cent of their own objectives in their Road Safety Strategy should give the Roads Minister great cause for concern.

“I also urge the Minister to use this opportunity to meet with local community members on this and other issues.”

An area just south of the Bruxner Highway turn-off near Ballina was the scene of two fatal addicents within 24 hours. A campervan and a semi-trailer collided about noon on Thursday, killing a woman.

Just over 12 hours later, a man died after a head on-collision involving a utility. Police believe a utility was travelling south on the Pacific Highway about 12.30am when it crossed to the incorrect side of the road just south of the Bruxner Highway turn-off.

As a result, the 30-year-old male driver of the utility died at the scene while the 30-year-old male truck driver escaped injury.

Crash Investigation Unit officers attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours. Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
