Ned Kelly’s gone missing — and Alison wants him back

“Those low mongrels,” was Greg Hurford’s reply when informed by his neighbour Alison James that her unique and quirky Ned Kelly letter box that had been taking guard over the entrances of their two properties had been not so ceremoniously removed (stolen) from his place of residence just outside Alstonville.

Alison said that over the past three years many a passer-by had made a double-take when traveling down Rifle Range Road as this local icon bailed them up.

Ned had proved to be a great hit with many motorists but no more so than with families with small children. “Many a car often stopped for kids to have their photo taken with ‘Ned’ and we have had numerous messages left in Ned asking where we got him from,” Alison said.

“One of those kids is so upset she has offered to help her dad make us a new one through his new-found craft skills and a love of recycling old toilet tissues rolls. Thanks Jessica.

“Ned was a housewarming gift made by my Dad who runs a car smash repair business in Canberra, so he’s a one-off, with many hours of intricate work going into Ned’s design and creation which made him irreplaceable to me and my partner.

“But alas on last Monday night Ned’s reign over travellers down Rifle Range Road had come to an end when he was ripped from the ground and removed.

“We have reported the theft to the local police but we would also like our local community to be on the lookout for Ned.”

Anyone who has any information re Ned’s whereabouts should contact Alstonville Police Station — or for those that have him, just drop him off somewhere public so he can be returned. “We just want him back,” said Alison.
