Aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in Ballina Shire

Ballina Shire Council will be carrying out aerial spraying of Bitou Bush within the Shire of Ballina on THURSDAY the 25th and/or FRIDAY the 26th of MAY 2006 (weather permitting). “Monsanto Roundup®” will be used containing the active ingredient 360g/L Glyphosate. The spraying will be postponed to the following week if unfavourable weather conditions apply.

The areas concerned are:

  • Black Head, East Ballina,
  • Angels Beach, East Ballina,
  • Flat Rock, East Ballina,
  • The southern end of Sharps Beach, Skennars Head.

Bitou Bush is a listed noxious weed and a weed of national significance with the capability of threatening native coastal plant communities. It is anticipated that the actual spraying time will only take approximately 1.5 hours and will be carried out between 8am and 5pm on the Thursday and/or Friday. Aerial seeding of native species will also be conducted at the same time to assist in regeneration.

Council Rangers and Officers will be present to restrict public access whilst spraying is being carried out. Council recommends that residents and visitors keep clear of these areas during this operation and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
