A great week of surfing; let’s hope it lasts for the All Girls

It’s been a great week of surfing, with an east to north-east swell producing waves at most local beaches.

Flat Rock has been good all week, peaking with waves of almost 2m on Thursday. It’s been malibu heaven! And there were even waves being surfed on the south side of the rock.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that today the wind shifted to the north, so expect the swell to be smaller this weekend.

Let’s hope that the low pressure systems in southern Australia generate a decent swell for next weekend, when the girls strut their stuff in the hugely popular Icon Australia All Girls Showdown.

Organisers say that the Open Pro division is a ‘who’s who’ of the women’s professional circuit, including Stephanie Gilmore, who may face off against leading locals Laurina McGrath, Sheridan Shields, Pauline Menczer and Jenny Boggis.

All up, 11 of the leading 40 WQS women will compete.

There will be plenty of action on the beach, with prize giveaways, and the Lennox Head firies will be firing (pardon the pun) up the barbie.

Signs outside Lennox News and opposite the pub will advertise the daily locations.

Meanwhile, more than 200 of the nation’s best young surfers will descend on the Gold Coast in July to compete for the approval of Australia’s most famous surfer, Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo.

A four-day competition, to be held from July 1-5 at Duranbah, a break Occy has honed his trademark backside turns over the past 20 years, the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp will attract guys and girls aged 16 and under from as far away as Western Australia and New Zealand.

Now in its third year, Occy’s Grom comp is a premier event for the next generation of junior rippers, with former winners including Byron Bay’s Ellis Ericson, the Gold Coast’s Chris Bennetts and rising superstar Sally Fitzgibbon (Gerroa).
