All Girls set for a surfing weekend to remember
This weekend will be a Long Weekend to remember, according to the All Girls Surfriders Club which will host the ICON, Australia’s largest all-women’s surfing contest.
Event co-ordinator Vicki Bellato said: “Come and see some of Australia’s best female surfers shredding the waves for their chance to win thousands of dollars in cash and prizes donated by ICON Australia, major sponsors and local businesses.
“The All Girls Surfriders Club invite the community to be involved in the carnival atmosphere beachside.
“This long weekend will be a hype of activity with Grombiz skateboards providing a practice area where spectators can learn how to ride the ‘Scriber Skateboard’. They will also be hosting a fun and casual slalom competition, so be there for your chance to win a Scriber valued at $395.”
For the kids there will be face painting from 10am until 2pm daily, and there is the chance to win an Optus mobile phone, plus prizes in the ICON, Gallaz and local business giveaways.
“Don’t forget to place your Northern Star coupon in the red barrel at the contest site before 1pm Monday for your chance to win a Fluid Foils-Ed Sinnot surfboard,” Vicki said.
“All 192 competitors will receive an official event eco showbag, T-shirt and event program, as well as product and vouchers from ICON, Gallaz, The Backroom – Hair, Body and Beauty, Gary Fox – The Good Guys, Grombiz, Waves and Gold Coast Surf, Palmers surf and stickers and discounts from Triple X, Emery and Surf Aids.
“On Saturday evening competitors, family and friends will be under the spotlight for their chance to be crowned the 2006 ICON Idol!”
The evening kicks off 6.30pm at the Department of Sport and Recreation Function room. Admission prices: Ccompetitors free, family and friends $7 at the door includes snacks, BYO beverage. Prizes have been donated by ICON, Gary Fox-The Good Guys Ballina and lucky door prizes from local businesses. The competitors-only Chixstix surfboard will be drawn at 8.30pm. Competitors must be there to win.
Competition format: The best two surfers from each heat continue through to the next level. Monday is finals day where the best will battle it out for the Showdown title in each of the seven divisions. Among the prizes is a a Joe Stark stainless steel art trophy. Competition kicks off each morning at 7.30am, with the most contestable surf break being chosen between Lennox beach and Ballina’s North Wall. The daily competition site will be advertised outside Lennox News and signage will be posted on the grass opposite the Lennox Point Hotel.
