Stopping those nuisance telemarketing calls
Are you one of those people who detest telemarketing calls — the ones that always come when you’re in the shower, cooking dinner or settling into a good movie?
If so, there is somewhere to turnĀ – the Australian Direct Marketing Association (ADMA). The Australian Government has introduced into Parliament the Do Not Call Register Bill 2006, and it allows for fines for companies which breach the new law.
There are exemptions to the law — charities, political parties (of course), government bodies, educational institutions and religious organisations are among them.
There are limitations: Only member companies of the ADMA are bound by the regulations, so you might still get those calls from overseas. And only residential telephone numbers can be put on the register — small businesses cannot.
Despite those limitations, I’ve signed up. Anything to stop those annoying calls.
And a tip: I’ve found that there’s usually a delay of a few seconds when you answer the call and say hello. So if the caller doesn’t react immediately, I hang up. If it is someone with a genuine reason to call, they always call back.

Me too!
Thanks Barry.
What a much needed relief and thanks for the tip.
I read too that those calls we receive throughout the day with no-one on the line are actually auto diallers registering the times ‘live’ answerers are at home.

After posting that yesterday, I received two telemarketing calls — both from Greenpeace.
I admire the work that organisation does, but I didn’t think it would stoop to such a nuisance practice to gain support.

I seem to get so many of these calls and most come from India, I have my no under another name in the ph. book (instead of paying for a silent no) so as soon as these pest ring and ask for anyone with that name I just say “sorry I just killed them all” then hang up. they don’t deserve anyone to spend time listening to them. i don’t think anyone including religions etc have the right to pester you for donatione stc on the ph. how the hell do you know who these ppl are, as if you’d be stupid enough to donate over the ph to just a voice goodness knows where.
