Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report

NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann reports on the local fishing scene …

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says there are still good numbers of nice jewfish around the walls and along the Town Reach. They’re biting on Halco hard lures, soft plastics and live bait, with some fish of 15-20kg, and there are smaller school jew from the ferry up to Wardell.

Blackfish are improving along the Porpoise Wall but still a little slow in North Creek. Whiting and flathead still being caught in the main river. Bream have improved with some quality fish over a kilo now among the rats.

A few fair tailor from the more sheltered headlands but the beaches have been a little rough with the swell of the past few days, although there are bream in the beach holes and around the washes on the breakwalls.

Australian salmon are also starting to turn up on what is rapidly becoming an annual migration from the south since netting closures north of Sydney a few years ago and the demise of the Eden cannery. They’re far from the greatest eating fish on the planet but give a great account of themselves on light gear and are the ideal catch-and-release fish, especially once you’ve taken one home and tried to cook it!

Seas have been big over the past few days but before that there were some snapper and pearl perch on the wider grounds and the leatherjackets are starting to kick in.
