Weekend surf report: It’s Gromfest time

All eyes on the local surf scene this weekend focus on Lennox Head, where the annual Rusty Gromfest will be held.

And it’s good news for the 350 competitors, with a solid south-east swell to 1.5m today.

The forecast is that the swell will hold over the weekend, decreasing for the final days of the competition early next week.

A high pressure system in the Bight should keep the winds from the south over the weekend, with the Bureau of Meterology forecasting north-westerlies on Monday.

The Gromfest is rated as Australia’s top junior competition, so, a few years down the track, expect to see the stars of this weekend performing on the world stage.

The contest will feature the best of Australia’s young male and female surfers competing in 16 and under, 14 and under and 12 and under divisions. They will be joined by surfers from other Pacific nations.

The competition is mobile in the Ballina Shire area, but Lennox is the preferred venue. Finals are set for Monday, although Tuesday has been scheduled in if needed.
