Weekend surf report

It’s been a great week for surfing, highlighted by the excellent conditions for last weekend’s Gromfest at Lennox Head.

The Gromfest sure packs them in — almost 350 groms were entered, and by the time you add on their parents and siblings, that’s a lot of extra people in the district.

The contest is a great boon to Lennox Head, with shopkeepers and accommodation houses doing a roaring trade.

While Lennox main beach turned it on for Gromfest, a clean swell to 2m provided excellent waves at Lennox Point and Flat Rock on Sunday. Main beach at Evans Head also had something to offer.

Flat Rock was ‘chockers’ on Sunday, and it was spectacular to watch the better surfers taking off almost on the south side of the rock and hurtling across in front of the rock platform.

The swell eased off mid-week but yesterday had risen to about a metre. However, although an increased swell is forecast this weekend, so too are north-easterly winds, courtesy of a low pressure system in western NSW which also is expected to dump a fair amount of rain on us.

So after a week of sheer bliss in the water, pickings could be fairly slim this weekend.

Oh well, that’s surfing! If you’re stuck for something to do, check out the new Triple X wetsuit store at the north Ballina industrial estate.

Triple X founder Don Munro has moved from a dingy shed to new custom-built premises — an indication of the success of his business. Well done, mate!
