Weekend fishing report

NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report …

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says the river is coloured with a reasonable fresh coming down, something we don’t see very often at this time of year.

Fishing should be good for the weekend around the lower walls, especially on the incoming tide. Whiting, bream and flathead were getting caught today (Friday).

Quite a few jew have been bagged around the walls during the rough weather on hard and soft lures and bait.

Not many reports from outside but there were good snapper and pearlies out wide and a few reds on the closer reefs before the weather turned nasty early in the week.

Still salmon and chopper tailor from the beaches with bream in the washes around the headlands.

At Evans Head we’ve had around 120mm or rain and lousy weather since Monday, with the beaches and the bar closed out and only a few diehards fishing the walls for bream, whiting and salmon.

There might be a jew or two around the walls as it settles a little. About 1.5m of swell coming in at around 12-13 to the minute with still rain squalls offshore at times.

Bream and whiting in the river around the bridge with the occasional rather nice flathead.
