Police mourn colleague’s sudden death
Police in the Richmond Area Local Command were today mourning the sudden death of their colleague, Sgt Colin McKenzie.
Sgt McKenzie, the head of the Ballina Highway Patrol, died on Thursday after taking part in rehearsals for today’s National Police Remembrance Day service in Canberra.
Officers from throughout Australia were participating in the rehearsal at the National Police Memorial about 5pm when Sgt McKenzie became ill.
The 50-year-old was taken by ambulance to Canberra Hospital but later passed away.
Sergeant McKenzie was attached to Ballina Highway Patrol within the Richmond Local Area Command. He was a member of the NSW Police for more than 30 years.
NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney said: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of this fine officer and my thoughts are with his family.
“On behalf of the NSW Police we send our heartfelt condolences to Sergeant McKenzie’s family and colleagues.”
