Weekend surf report

A southerly change which blew through mid-afternoon on Friday holds the key to weekend wave conditions.

After a few days of northerlies, there’s still a reasonable east-north-east swell to a metre, so if the southerly cleans it up, look for some clean beach breaks on Saturday.

Hopefully the wind will stay from the south for the weekend.

Unfortunately, the excellent sandbank that made Flat Rock so good in the winter months has gone, and it’s looking more like the ‘Fat Rock’ of days gone by.

Also, there’s been reports of sharks clearing bathers and surfers out of the water around Ballina.

We know they’re always out there, but there seems to have more reports of sightings this winter and spring.

Veteran shaper and surfer Phil Myers has a theory on why that is so. Phil reckons that the salmon which used to be netted on the south coast are not targeted these days, and the sharks are following them on their northern migration.

There could well be some truth in that. More and more salmon are being caught off our beaches these days, and some long-time anglers say that hasn’t always been the case.
