Ian Causley to quit Federal Parliament

Ballina MP Don Page today paid tribute to long-serving MP Ian Causley for his contribution to the electorates of Clarence (State) and Page (Federal) during 23 years in Parliament.

Mr Causley announced today he would not be contesting the 2007 Federal Election.

“Ian has been a staunch advocate for a stronger economy for the NSW North Coast,” Mr Page said.

“He was always keen to ensure people who wanted to work be given that opportunity.

“He is a straight-shooter who always said what he thought.

“Throughout his long career he has been strongly supported by his popular wife June.

“They have both given dedicated service to the Clarence and Page electorates, attending thousands of functions and supporting our local communities.”

NSW Nationals chairman Patrick Maher also praised Mr Causley. “Ian Causley has made an enormous contribution to New South Wales as both the State Member for Clarence and the Federal Member of Page,” he said.

“For 22 years Ian was well-known and respected for his no-nonsense approach to battling away in the interests of the people, industries and communities he represented on the North Coast and around New South Wales.

“Ian served with distinction as a Minister for Water Resources, Natural Resources, Mines, Agriculture and Fisheries from 1988 to 1995 and more recently as the Deputy Speaker in the Federal Parliament. He was one of those Ministers who you knew would be an advocate for industry inside and outside the Cabinet room regardless.”

The timing of the pre-selection of The Nationals Candidate for Page will be determined at a later date, following the release by the AEC of the final electoral boundary determinations.
