Four killed in tragic accident

The Northern Rivers community is in a state of shock today as the tragic loss of four teenagers in a motor vehicle accident at Broken Head, near Byron Bay, early on Sunday sinks in.

The four teenage males, aged 16 and 17, were all from Goonellabah.

Police said that about 12.30am, police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command responded to reports of a single car crash on The Coast Road.

Police attended to find four males deceased at the scene. The 17-year-old male driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment.

It is believed the five youths were travelling south along The Coast Road, in a Holden Commodore, when the vehicle left the road and hit several trees in a nearby embankment.

General duties police from Tweed/Byron LAC attended the scene, along with Byron Highway Patrol and Crash Investigation personnel.

Police responded by implementing temporary closures of The Coast Road and Ross Lane at Lennox Head, while investigations were conducted.

Police are preparing a report of the information for the Coroner.

Investigations are continuing.
