Police to show solidarity on White Ribbon Day

Across the State police officers will wear a white ribbon on November 25 in a show of solidarity to White Ribbon Day and the 16 Days of Activism. The wearing of the ribbons signifies the commitment NSW Police have to eliminating family and domestic violence.

White Ribbon Day is the start of the 16 Days of Activism, which ends on World Human Rights Day, December 10. The NSW Stop Domestic Violence Day falls on December 1. In NSW the 16 day of Activism campaign is being co-ordinated by the NSW Strategy to reduce Violence Against Women.

Assistant Commissioner Mahoney, NSW Police Corporate Spokesperson for Family and Domestic Violence, Mahoney believes the coming events are an opportunity to draw public awareness to family and domestic violence, an issue that police deal with regularly and take very seriously,

“Violence by some men gives all men a bad name, and we as police want to show we won’t tolerate that,” he said.

The 16 Days of Activism aims to increase community awareness of the issue, and encourage reporting to police, particularly by young women. Figures show that 57% of Australian women will experience an incident of physical or sexual violence by a man in their lifetime.

The new Family and Domestic Violence component of the NSW Police website is being launched to coincide with the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism. The site provides up-to-date information, including how to report, police and the legal response, as well as an explanation of the cycles of violence.
