Ballina, Evans Head weekly fishing report

NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report for Ballina and Evans Head …

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says the whiting have been the shakers and movers this week in the big tides around Pimlico and further upstream. Bloodworms by far have been the best bait, with anything else producing only a few fish, where the proper bait is getting a bite every drop from fish up to 40cm.

A few decent flathead in the lower river, with the best fish this week 6.85kg, which was weighed and released. A few smaller, eating-type flatties from the ferry upstream to Wardell bridge.

The mud crabs are on the march in the creeks with bag-limit catches at times.

On the beaches, a few dart and whiting are turning up with the odd flathead, with no particular beach better than any other.

Offshore, the wider grounds have been producing a few reds and the odd pearl perch.

I can’t really report on what’s been happening at Evans Head because I haven’t been there this week. Maybe best to ring Neil at Evans Sports and Marine on 6682 4536.
