Lifesavers promised public liability protection — Ballina MP

Ballina MP and Shadow Minister for North Coast Don Page today outlined the NSW Liberal/Nationals Coalition’s commitment to give public liability protection to volunteer surf lifesavers through the creation of a Surf Lifesaving Act.

Mr Page said a NSW Coalition Government would create a Surf Lifesaving Act to ensure the burden of public liability insurance for surf lifesavers was covered by Treasury and not by individuals or clubs.

“At present lifesavers often have to pay for their own insurance just so they can protect us at the beach,” Mr Page said.

“A Surf Lifesaving Act will give volunteer and professional lifesavers support and recognition as an emergency service.

“Volunteers in the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service are already covered under legislation. Surf lifesavers should be added to the list.

“Our surf lifesavers are incredibly professional and dedicated – they deserve State Government backing through their own Act.

“Recognising Surf Lifesaving as an Emergency Service would provide greater access to funding for the equipment and resources clubs and volunteers require to continue the vital work they do.

“This will in no way impinge on their ability to maintain their independence – it will simply offer them greater support.

“It will also allow the surf lifesaving movement representation on the State Rescue Board.”
