Ballina marina is a step nearer
A marina for Ballina is closer to reality following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ballina Shire Council and the NSW Department of Lands.
Minister for Lands Tony Kelly, pictured, said the memorandum would pave the way for a Marine Precinct Master Plan to be developed next year.
“The master plan will identify the potential for improved boating facilities and marine infrastructure to meet the needs of the fishing industry and the growing recreational boating public,” he said.
“The plan will also identify improvements to the significant Crown reserves adjoining the river, providing people with ongoing access to open space.”
Mr Kelly said the outcomes of the master plan would be incorporated into the Ballina Local Environment Plan.
It is expected the memorandum of understanding, which takes in the area from Missingham Bridge to Burns Point Ferry, will allow the council to plan ahead for future development.
One much sought-after development is the construction of a marina to replace the one which was situated near Burns Point Ferry but was demolished to make way for housing development.
Without a marina, Ballina is missing out on a section of the tourist trade — those lucky enough to be able to sail the oceans.
It also goes against the town’s history — ever since white settlement Ballina has been a port. It’s still a port, but what good is a port without the proper facilities such as a marina?
A marina also would allow for better usage of our main attraction — the Richmond River.
