Ballina Shire residents a healthy lot, according to research
We are a healthy lot here in Ballina Shire, according to North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS) research.
The NCAHS says people living in its region — from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie — are the State’s highest consumers of fresh fruit and vegetables.
It says that 195,900 North Coast residents aged 16 and over eat the recommended quantity of fruit on a daily basis.
North Coast residents also are the State’s highest consumers of vegetables.
The NCAHS puts the results down to the availability of fresh produce in the region, and its own healthy eating programs.
Other findings from the research include:
- Life expectancy on the North Coast is similar to the State average: 83.5 years for females (State average 83.3), and 77.8 for males (State average 78.2).
- 57.5 per cent of males undertake the recommended amount of exercise (State average 56.6 per cent). The girls are letting the team down slightly, with our North Coast average being 44.3 per cent (State average 47.3).
I wonder if housework was included as ‘exercise’. If it was, the ladies would be leading the figures by a huge margin!
