My first contact with Greg was when he was appointed the Captain/coach with Ballina Seagulls back in 1980.I came up from Canberra with a mate Alan Perry, who was originally from Ballina, and Captained/coached Ballina a few years later .I remember the preseason training was the hardest I ever had to do,and I thought I,m never going to make first grade, because there were a lot of other guys that seemed to be fitter than me,but I persevered in the heat, and I eventually made the first grade trials, and played on the wing, and played in a few first grade trials.I had never been fitter in my life, before the beginning of a comp. I got a call from another mate to come back to Canberra, because there was a job as a carpenter for me,and also I really wanted to play in the forwards as a second rower, even though I had never played second row before, and there was an opportunity to play there,in quite a strong club back there.I just remember Greg ,was a brickie,s labourer back then, and i can recall him jogging past me in these road runs in the heat,i think he was about thirty then,I was twenty four, and I was thinking how tough he was working all day doing that ,then running past me like a nineteen year old. What I,m getting at in all this,is he taught me a very strong ethic in all this is to work your arse off,if you want to succeed in something.I ended up playing second row that year, and my team made the grand final, which we lost, but i was awarded best forward at presentation,I have never forgotten Greg Friar,in my short time I was there, absolute gentleman.Cheers John.
