Coalition promises hot-water system rebates

A NSW Liberal/Nationals Coalition Government would provide NSW residents with a rebate of up to $1000 to install a solar hot water system in their home, Member for Ballina Don Page said today.

Mr Page said the $58 million rebate scheme would allow individuals to help address climate change from within their own homes.

“Electric water heating is the single largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions in the average home. By switching to solar hot water power, we can save energy, money and help address global warming,” Mr Page said.

“Under the scheme a $500 rebate will be given to people who install a hot water system in a new home.

“A $1000 rebate will be provided to those people who replace a peak electric hot water system with a solar hot water system in their existing home.

“Currently in NSW there are about 448,800 peak electric hot water systems and just 64,000 solar hot water systems.

“By installing a hot water system, each NSW household can reduce energy consumption for heating purposes by up to 75 per cent, prevent up to four tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and slash their household energy bill by as much as $400.

“Instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers’ dollars on expensive television advertisements about wind power, the NSW Labor Government could have been providing financial incentives for families to make the switch to solar hot water.

“The NSW Coalition is committed to addressing climate change and assisting individuals, house by house, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
