Weekend surf report

A cracking swell to eight foot greeted surfers this morning. That’s the good news.

The bad news? A strong northerly blew up by 10am, effectively seeing the best swell of the year go to waste.

No doubt remnants of the swell will hang around over the weekend, but north-easters are forecast, so it might be wise to check the beaches as early as possible.

Those lucky enough to surf on Thursday were greeted with solid waves at Flat Rock, Boulders and the Point at Lennox.

East Ballina baker Mitch Parr was one surfer to take advantage of the big swell, catching what he described as the longest ride of his life at Flat Rock on Thursday arvo.

Mitch says he took off next to the Rock and rode the wave all the way to Sharpes Beach.

Meanwhile, on the competition scene, Lennox Head’s Adam Melling continued his recent good form, knocking former ASP surfer Matt Hoy out of the Newcastle Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series (WQS) event at Merewether yesterday.

Lennox Head’s Jock Barnes also stood out, and with Melling advanced to today’s round of 48. Ballina Info was talking to Jock’s dad Steve this morning and he reported that he had the best wave he’d ridden in years at Lennox Point on Thursday afternoon.
