It’s lights out on March 31
Councils across the Northern Rivers region will be switching off all lights and non-essential appliances to support Earth Hour next Saturday 31 March. Ballina Shire Council says it invites all businesses and residents to join them in cutting energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for one hour from 7.30pm on 31 March 2007.
“Switching off your lights for one hour is a great example of how the small actions that we all take can create a large impact when we work together. Our local actions create the ripples for global change and Earth Hour is one way for the Northern Rivers region to show its support in reducing the effects of climate change,” the council said.
“Council is part of the Northern Rivers Group on Energy (NRGe), a regional network of councils working together to reduce energy consumption at the local level. The NRGe is promoting Earth Hour in the Northern Rivers and hopes all residents and businesses will get involved on March 31.
“Council has supported a number of energy efficiency initiatives as part of its Cities for Climate Protection program. These include the recent Santa Goes Green project and assisting Neco Pty Limited and Easy Being Green to distribute over 35,000 energy efficient lightbulbs to 5800 residents in Ballina Shire.
“Earth Hour is an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund Australia and The Sydney Morning Herald who are working together in the Sydney area to encourage companies, government departments, individuals and families to turn off their lights for just one hour. It’s a simple action that sends a powerful message that we care about the future of the planet.”
