Lennox, Ballina surfers in strong showing at Byron Easter Classic
Surfers from Lennox Head and Ballina performed well at the Ben King Memorial Byron Bay Easter Classic, highlighted by Jame Wood’s third placing in the open men’s final.
The final was won by former WCT surfer and Byron Bay local Kieren Perrow, who claimed his third Easter Classic crown at Broken Head on Sunday.
After a slow start the natural footer staked his claim to the title with eight minutes remaining, scoring a 9.17 from the judges for a right-hander which he unleashed a devastating array of vertical re-entries, to claim his second win in the space of two weeks after winning the Margaret River Masters in Western Australia. Perrow’s last wins at the Easter Classic were when he won two years running in 1998 and 1999, and he is now the only surfer to win the event three times.
Perrow won from another Byron local, Jarrad Sullivan, Lennox Head’s Wood, and with another Byron local Luke Stickley.
The event held in the memory of Byron Bay Boardriders president Ben King is one of the most sought after titles in Australian surfing, and the list of winners reading like a who’s who of Australian surfing.
