Weekend fishing report

NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann reports on the local fishing scene …

Bruce from Dave’s Bait Shop says the breeze is still kicking around unpleasantly and the swell is predicted to rise for the weekend.

In the river, whiting are thinning out a bit but you’ll still get half a dozen or so up at Pimlico and in North Creek. Next week’s tides will probably be the last for them.

Still a few larger flathead in the lower river with school flatties form the ferry up to Wardell, with good catches around Pimlico.

Blackfish and bream improving a little and the bigger tides next week should help them along.

Mud crabs up Emigrant and North creeks and a few catches of blue swimmers in the sandy lower reaches for the first time for some years.

Jewfish and bream around the walls with tailor as well at times. No reports from outside because of the weather.

I can’t report much from Evans Head because I’ve been in Brisbane most of the week. Some nice bait schools sheltering in form the southerly the bay earlier in the week so there should be some decent pelagics about when bar access is OK. The last blow brought the gannets up from the south and they were busy diving into the bait.
