Weekly fishing report for Ballina, Evans Head
NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report …
Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says quite a few decent-sized flathead have been caught in the lower river, with good numbers of smaller ones right up to Rileys Hill.
Whiting in the lower reaches are tapering off for the season but you’ll still get a few on bloodworms on the current bigger tides.
Bream are starting to show but they’re mostly fairly small at this stage, although the odd decent one is being caught among the throwbacks.
Swimmer crabs still in North Creek and the Town Reach. Remember, you cannot use traps below the ferry, only witches’ hats.
Tailor have been very good on South Wall and South Beach, with a few during the day on metals, and better quality fish after dark on cut baits.
Spotted mackerel on the local reefs are pretty patchy but head wide for snapper and pearl perch.
Similarly, patchy spotties off Evans Head with a few around the Middle Ground and down towards South Reef and a couple of Spaniards turning up as well. Some snapper, trag and the odd jew, especially in the evenings.
Plenty of nice bream, flathead and the occasional whiting on the beaches, with tailor schools coming and going. Bream and whiting in the river.
