New South Wales Governor Marie Bashir made a timely visit to the Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum during her day-long visit to Ballina today.
Professor Bashir’s visit coincided with the 65th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the Governor was able to see plenty of World War II memorabilia during her tour of the museum.
The main purpose of Professor Bashir’s visit to Ballina was to open extensions to St Andrew’s Village, a community-based not-for-profit organisation which aims to provide a high quality of aged care servies.
As well as the naval museum, the Governor also visited Ballina High School, where she was given a rundown on the Trade School.
The Trade School is one of 10 around the State which allow students to take on school-based apprenticeships.
The Governor was full of praise for the museum and the work done by its volunteers. She told Ballina Info that it was a great educational tool for people of all ages.
The museum, which is home to a raft from the La Balsas expedition of 1973, which landed in Ballina, attracts about 10,000 adult visitors a year, plus thousands of school children.
Member for Ballina Don Page accompanied the Governor on her visit.
