Work starts on community art gallery in Ballina

bacci.jpgWork has started on the refurbishment and conversion of Ballina’s Old Council Chambers, pictured, into the Northern Rivers Community Art Gallery.

Transfield Services commenced work this week on the substantial redevelopment of the Old Council Chambers, Ballina, which is expected to take 10-12 weeks to complete.

The design will maintain the heritage look and feel of the building, while improving many aspects to allow the building to function as an Art Gallery.

Ballina Mayor Phillip Silver said: “Council is pleased to see work start on the redevelopment of the Old Council Chambers and the renovated building will provide an excellent community art gallery not only for the residents of Ballina but also for the many visitors to the region.

“This project has been a long time in the planning and I would like to acknowledge the excellent work undertaken by the local arts community, through Ballina Arts and Crafts Centre Inc (BACCI), in raising funds and garnishing community support for the project.

“I’m eagerly looking forward to the official opening of the gallery in August, as this building will provide an excellent resource for local artists to display their wares.”
