Weekend fishing report for Ballina, Evans Head

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says the flatties and whiting are hanging on in North Creek and the Town Reach.

Blackfish are improving with bags of 10 to a dozen being caught as they swing from dining on cabbage to green weed.

A few small school jew around the Wardell bridge.

A good run of muddies up Emigrant Creek and the main river with bag limits achieved easily, and the sand crabs are still hanging in there.

Tailor are persisting quite well along South Beach and the local headlands. Plenty of snapper and pearl perch out wide. Not too many mackerel reports.

Different story on the mackerel off Evans Head yesterday when the spotties came on big-time and everyone seemed to dong them on live baits and pillies, especially on the Middle Ground. A few hits on the trag and the odd snapper and no other outside reports because nobody’s chasing anything else.

The beaches are fishing reasonably well with some decent bream around the Broadwater coffee rock and a few around the local headlands along with the odd school jew. Still nice whiting on the beaches with dart and the occasional school jew. Blackfish around the breakwalls and whiting and the odd small flathead in the river.
