Weekend surf report
There’s a small swell of about a metre today, and the wind is blowing north to north-west, so conditions are not good.
That might change tomorrow, with a westerly change predicted, but whether the swell holds after after today’s wind is in the hands of the surf gods.
A low pressure system in the south could bring a lift in the swell next week.
The big news for local surfing this week is that a push to have Lennox Point declared a Surfing Reserve is gathering momentum.
National Surfing Reserve (NSR) founder Brad Farmer says that Surfing Reserves are the best way to protect Australia’s iconic beaches, as usage and pressures on the coastal zone increase over the next decade. About 20 beaches worthy of ‘reserve status’ have made an Australian list, including Burleigh Heads and Noosa in Queensland, Crescent Head and North Narrabeen in NSW, and Margaret River in WA. The most recent was Angourie.
Ballina Shire councillor Alan Rich, also a dedicated surfer, is heading the local push and is sure to get plenty of support from those who have surfed the famous break. As you can see by our picture, taken during a big swell in mid-2001, The Point can provide some big-wave action (the pic was taken using a small automatic camera, so it’s not of the best quality. But you can get something of an idea of how big it was that day).
Ballina Info will bring you more on the progress of making The Point a Surfing Reserve over the next few months. There’s even a move to publish a history of The Point, which would make excellent reading.
Question: Does anyone out there know who the first surfers were to surf Lennox Point? That’s one of the many facts which it is hoped will be inlcuded in the proposed book.
