Weekend surf report

maldives.jpgThere’s an east to south-east swell of about a metre today and conditions were good along all beaches this morning, with North Wall at Ballina once again a popular spot.

South-west to south-east winds are forecast for the weekend, so, although not real big, you should find a decent wave at most spots.

It might be a bit small down Evans way, though.

Let’s hope conditions are good next weekend for one of the major events on our surfing calendar, the ICON All Girls Surf Showdown at Lennox.

The Showdown is on from June 9-11 and will showcase Australia’s top women surfers.

The Allgirls’ press release this week said: “Finalist history tells a very bright story, from the humble beginnings in 1993 where we had the likes of Trudy Todd competing in the 21 and Under and Haley Tasker taking out the Open Pro division, to top names over a 14-year period, including surfing sensations Pauline Menczer, Laurina McGrath, Jenny Boggis, Kate Skarrat, Sam Cornish, Rebecca Woods, Stephanie Gilmore, Nicola Atherton and Sally Fitzgibbon to name a few!”

‘Wipe out Waste’ is an intiative introduced by Ballina Shire Council and is supported by the ICON All Girls Surf Showdown for 2007.

Waste avoidance strategies at the event will include competitor calico bags and reuseable stainless steel mugs. Any recylcing at the event will be separated using two bins at each bin station and with the help of the Lennox Longboarders the club aims to recover 40% from recycling at this year’s event. Well done girls — that’s a great initiative.

On Saturday evening the Department of Sport and Recreation will host the Competitors and Sponsors ICON Showdown Disco Dance Fever and Fashion show. There will be a fashion parade, prizes and giveaways for best costume, ‘movers and groovers’, and competitors will go into a draw to win a Chixstix Surfboard.

No doubt one topic on the agenda will be the plan to declare Lennox Point an Australian Surfing Reserve.

Rachel Bonhote-Mead from the All Girls attended this week’s meeting to discuss the plan, and was keen to go back to her club members to get their thoughts.

Meanwhile, our picture this week, courtesy of Surfing Australia, is of Hussein Areef (a good surname for a surfer!), who is chasing a wildcard into the Sri Lankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives from June 3. Hussein is one of the Maldives’ best surfers.
