Weekend fishing report for Ballina, Evans Head
NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report …
Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina reckons some good bream have started to appear through the lower river but the best captures have been at night because of the clear water. The run of fish is just over size with a few around a kilo.
Flatties are still holding on quite well with the occasional bigger fish in the lower sections but the main run of fish are school size. Blackfish chasers are getting their ten or a dozen around Prospect Bridge and along the Porpoise Wall. School jew are still kicking around up at Wardell.
Some good-sized tailor around the walls on lures and pillies with better quality fish to 3kg from South Beach after dark on cut bait. The odd bream on the beaches as well. There were some snapper and pearlies out wide before the wind but it looks like the weather will intervene for the weekend.
Blustery north-westerlies at Evans Head on Friday and a fair sort of swell out wide but not a lot close inshore at the moment. Some good catches of school jew and tailor from the headlands during the week with bream and flathead along the beaches up towards Broadwater and whiting and bream down along Main Beach.
Bit too rough for the mullet to be seen in the waves but there should be a few about.
Offshore there have been some snapper, trag and school jew caught with smattering of small cobia and unconfirmed reports of mackerel.
Blackfish around the walls with some bream in the river and the odd school flathead around the bridge.
