Grant / Bentinck Street Intersection
Following an extraordinary meeting held Friday 8 June 2007 Mayor Phillip Silver said that he was relieved that Ballina Shire Council had resolved to establish a median strip at the intersection of Grant and Bentinck Streets Ballina.
Mayor Silver stated “I acknowledge that this was not the preferred outcome for a number of residents, however the median strip provides an immediate solution to the currently dangerous situation that exists at this intersection. This action, although not popular, is the right thing to do as it will quickly eliminate the risk of any further accidents occurring due to traffic crossing this intersection”.
Cr Silver also wished to reassure residents that Council remained committed to the provision of a roundabout at this intersection and a number of revenue opportunities will be examined to determine how and when Council can provide the preferred solution, being the roundabout.
“Unfortunately a roundabout is estimated to cost somewhere between $300,000 to $400,000 and without impacting on our current works program we were not in a position to immediately fund this work. Nevertheless I will be working with Councillors and senior staff to try and identify funding solutions as soon as possible” stated Mayor Silver.
The median strip, which is estimated to cost $50,000, is 100% funded by the RTA black spot program. The work must be completed during the 2006/07 financial year and Council’s engineering staff advise that the works will be completed by 30 June.

just a small comment on this medium strip, l had a near accident, a car pulled over to the side of the road, to l thought to park, and another car pulled up in middle of the road , so he could make a u turn to get around the strip!! the car l thought was parking was also doing a u turn to go around the strip.. and u say this is safe.. wow! silly me.. l must be more careful when l drive down benick street near this new medium strip!
