Surf Life Saving NSW warns of big seas

Surf Life Saving NSW is urging the public to stay away from coastal waters for at least the next 24 hours following a severe weather warning from the Bureau of Meteorology.

The third strong wind and storm front to hit the NSW coast in the past fortnight will result in damaging surf throughout much of the State, with the general public being warned to stay clear of the coastline until conditions ease.

“Seas will be very dangerous off the NSW coast Tuesday night and into Wednesday,” said the Bureau of Meteorology’s Regional Director in NSW Barry Hanstrum in a press release earlier today.

“Damaging winds with gusts to 100km/h are expected along the coastal strip from Nowra to Forster, including the eastern parts of Sydney, commencing before sunrise on Wednesday morning.”

Craig Roberts, Surf Life Saving NSW Lifesaving Services Manager, says that while common sense usually prevails, it is important to reiterate to the public the dangers of tackling such conditions.

“The surf can be an unpredictable place at the best of times, however Mother Nature can certainly make it an extremely dangerous place to be,” he said. “With swells of between four and seven metres predicted along the NSW coastline, we’re advising all swimmers and surfers to stay well clear of the beach until conditions turn more favourable later in the week.”
