Vandals threatening pest control, says NPWS
Vandals are threatening the successful pest control programs in the Newrybar Swamp area and surrounding lands including Ballina Nature Reserve by damaging and interfering with traps, according to the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
The Newrybar Swamp Feral Pig Management Committee, including the Rural Lands Protection Board (RLPB), Ballina Shire Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and private landholders are concerned about interference with current pest control programs in the area.
NPWS Pest Management Officer Lisa Wellman said anyone with information about the vandalism of the pest animal traps is encouraged to contact the NPWS or RLPB.
“People involved in these antisocial activities need to be aware that it is illegal to interfere with control programs,” Ms Wellman said.
“Dogs and any form of hunting are also prohibited in national parks and nature reserves.”
RLPB Noxious Animal Ranger Neil Hing said that a co-operative approach to pest control was essential.
“The Committee has been working closely with private landholders to implement actions from the Newrybar Swamp Feral Pig Strategy,” Mr Hing said.
“It is very disappointing to them to have people trespassing on their land to interfere with these programs which are funded by the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority.
“The community is asked to report any suspicious activity, especially 4WD vehicles that might be related to interference with this important pest control.”
Anyone with information should contact the NPWS or RLPB on 6621 2317.
