Council gives in-principle support to Lennox Point Surfing Reserve

Ballina Shire Council has approved in principle a proposal to nominate Lennox Point as a National Surfing Reserve.

The approval came at yesterday’s council meeting following a notice of motion from Cr Alan Rich.

Prominent Lennox Head businessman Wayne Lazarus addressed the council before the vote was taken, saying Lennox Point was a surfing icon and an exceptional surfing spot.

“A reserve is about respecting the surfing culture of the area,” Mr Lazarus, who has been in the area for 40 years and opened the first Lennox surf shop, said.

He stressed to the council that a Surfing Reserve was symbolic and that no user group could be excluded.

Mr Lazarus said there was widespread support for the proposal from Indigenous people and groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and Lions and Rotary clubs.

In his notice of motion, Cr Rich said the proposal had met with overwhelming enthusiasm and public endorsement.

“This concept has been warmly received as an extremely popular win/win concept throughout Lennox Head, the shire and the district, which reflects positively on all involved,” he said.

Ballina Shire Council’s in-principle support now opens the way for the nomination to go to a meeting of the National Surfing Reserves Reference Group on July 16.

If the working group approves the proposal, it is then forwarded to relevant government agencies, primarily the Department of Lands, for assessment.

Nice write-up Barry (and even better photo).

This can only be a win-win situation as far as I’m concerned. Has there been any final definition on the boundary of the reserve?
