Ballina High student gets a taste of high finance

Ballina High School student Katherine Stapels has been selected from a field of over 500 candidates to spend a week gaining an insider’s view of the world of high finance at the 2007 UBS Finance Academy.

Billion dollar stock market floats, company takeovers and the machinations of big business will all form part of the curriculum taught to 50 talented Year 11 public school students selected by the Secondary Schools Principals Associations in NSW, ACT and VIC to attend a week-long, fully-paid residential course commencing 9 July 2007 at Macquarie University, Sydney.

Brad Orgill, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, UBS Australasia, said the program was developed to help demystify the world of investment banking for students and their communities.

“While the world of corporate finance affects nearly everybody, it’s hard for ambitious students to learn about the industry and even harder to meet people working in it”, he said.

“We expose students to the theory and the practice of financial markets, through the use of expert speakers, ‘day in the life’ presentations, and field visits to our trading floor, the Australian Securities Exchange and the ABC Television studios.”

Mr Orgill said that the program teamed students with UBS investment bankers to work on real case studies, and offering an ongoing mentoring program at completion.

In its fifth year, the UBS Finance Academy is one of the major pillars of UBS’s community program in Australia.
