Weekend fishing report

NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report for Ballina, Evans Head …

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says there have been some good bream along the Town Reach, mostly late afternoons and early in the evening. Gut and flesh baits have been working very well.

Still a few whiting and flathead in the upper reaches. Blackfish in all the usual spots have been excellent with plenty of bag limits achieved.

Some tailor and a few bream around the walls and a few jew have been spun up from the walls and safer headlands.

Sea should ease over the weekend for reds on the closer reefs and out wide for snapper and pearl perch.

I’ve been away all week so really can’t give much of a first-hand report about Evans Head, although wind and swell seem to have kept the Evans Classic fleet bar-bound since Tuesday.

Word is that not a lot of reds were around when they did get out but some nice pearlies were out there.

Some big flathead weighed in live for the Classic with one fish around 8kg the star.

Bream were in big numbers spawning in the coffee rock up around Broadwater Beach and I think the best of those weighed was around 1.9kg.

Blackfish pretty good from the walls and there should be some bream and flathead in the river for a while when the releases from the live tanks are done.
