Level One water restrictions imposed

Level One water restrictions have been introduced in the Rous Water area, including Ballina Shire.

Rous Water said restrictions were necessary because Rocky Creek Dam had dropped to 60 per cent capacity.

“The restrictions are part of our overall strategy to make sure that there is enough water for everyone until the dam fills up again,” Rous Water said.

“If dam levels continue to fall, more severe restrictions will be implemented.”

Rous Water said Level One restrictions would remain in place until the dam level increased again to 70%.

“Level Two water restrictions will apply if the dam level drops to 50%. Level Three restrictions will apply if the dam level drops to 40%,” Rous Water said.

There are no exemptions. Restrictions apply to everyone, including businesses.

Here are some frequently asked questions, and answers, from Rous Water:

I’m on bore water or tank water, so do the restrictions apply to me? In most cases no. The water restrictions apply throughout the Rous Region for the use of reticulated water only. However, if you get water from water carriers you are required to comply with the restrictions.

Are there penalties if I break the rules? Council staff will be monitoring compliance with the water restrictions. On-the-spot fines of $220 for individuals apply to breaches of the restrictions.

Can I report breaches of the water restrictions? Yes. Breaches of the restrictions can be reported (anonymously if you wish) by calling 1800 450 203.

What can I do to save water? For more information about using water more efficiently visit the Rous Water website at www.rouswater.nsw.gov.au or contact Rous Water on 1800 450 203.

The most common Level One restrictions are:

For residential and commercial watering of lawns and gardens, sprinklers and fixed hoses may be used on every second day between 6am and 10am and 3pm to 7pm on odd or even days matching the property number.

All hoses must be fitted with an on/off nozzle.

Emptying and refilling of existing pools and outdoor spas is banned.

Driveways, paved areas and roofs may only be washed for health or safety reasons, using a bucket.
