A  tow-in surfer and jet-ski rider had lucky escapes this morning after getting into difficulty while surfing off Skennars Head, near Ballina.

The surfer was one of a group taking advantage of a six-foot plus swell. He got into trouble and came within metres of being pounded on the rocky headland.

A tow-in ski rider also got into difficulty as he swerved to avoid hitting another surfer. His ski flipped and was lost in a cave in the headland.

Other ski riders came to the aid of the surfer and the ski rider.

Police and surf rescue personnel were called to the scene.

However, the surfer and his tow-in mate managed to escape to safer waters.

Surf rescue reported that the group returned safely to Lennox Head beach.
