Weekely fishing report for Ballina, Evans Head

NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report for Ballina and Evans Head

Wayne at Dave’s Bait Shop says bream have been the flavour of the week. They’re going well on the beaches, South Wall and from North Wall up to Lennox Head with fish from 500g to a kilo and more.

There are also some decent ones in the river but the main emphasis tends to be on the surf fish, although increasing seas might drive in a better class of fish.

Tailor haven’t been great on the north side but South Beach and the South Wall have been quite good. Jewfish on South Beach, South Wall and just inside the river but nothing much upstream at this stage.

Blackfish are going strong at all the usual haunts, like the Porpoise Wall, Prospect Bridge and the ferry and they’re still taking green weed with gusto.

No one has been outside in the past few days but reports before that of heaps of leatherjackets.

A similar situation at Evans Head on Friday with a fair swell increasing and winds picking up, with the waves lapping the spinifex at high tide. Pity, because there have been bream and tailor along the beaches along with a few school jew as well around the headlands and the Broadwater Beach coffee rock.

Blackfish have kept the faith and there have been good catches from both walls and as far up as the Bream Hole and even the bridge. Very few boats have braved offshore and I haven’t heard how those have gone.
